The FreaK Chef HTML FreaK Chef: Magnets and the Magic of Cooking!

strange boss

Hello freak family! Kolbeigh van Keuken is back with a slightly...unexpected culinary adventure. "Magnets? When you cook? Trust me, it's a fascinating mix of science and taste! Today we're delving into the world of magnets: how they work, why they're cool, and most importantly, how you can use them to improve your kitchen. It might sound a little strange, but bear with me. It all started when I was a kid trying to make magnetic condiments. An endeavor that required a lot of fridge magnets and glue (Curiosity.) This led me to find unusual ways to improve the cooking experience, which has fascinated me my whole life, and of course I secretly added paprika because it makes everything taste better.

Magnets: A quick and dirty science lesson

So what is a magnet? Simply put, it is an object that exerts a force and pulls or pushes another object. This force is created by the movement of electrons within the material. Atoms have spinning electrons, and these spinning electrons create a small magnetic field. In most materials, these fields are randomly arranged so that the magnetization is canceled. However, in ferromagnetic materials (e.g., iron, nickel, cobalt), the atomic structure causes these fields to align and create a strong overall magnetic field. Think of it like a series of little compass needles all pointing in the same direction!

Food with iron? Not really... but you can *use* magnets!

Now you won't find natural magnetic ingredients in your pantry (sorry you won't find magnetic potatoes!). But we can use magnets to intelligently interact with food. Most often they are used as magnetic containers and organizers. But think a little more creatively. I have experimented with using magnets to create unique presentations and even subtly influence the cooking process. Don't worry. Nothing dangerous or too complicated! The goal is to add some *frreaK* style to your kitchen.

Recipe: Magnetic oil with herbs and spices.

Of course, this recipe isn't about *eating* magnets! Oils with herbs and spices are poured into magnetic containers. Magnets hold herbs and spices in place, creating wonderful aromatic oils. Perfect for sprinkling on salads, pasta or grilled vegetables. And of course, a generous dose of chili powder is a hallmark of FreaK Chef!

Raw materials:

  • 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp dried rosemary (or freshly chopped)
  • 1 tbsp dried thyme (or fresh chopped)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (whole)
  • Magnetic Spice Jars (Required!)

Instructions:

  1. Mix olive oil, rosemary, thyme, smoked paprika and red pepper in a heatproof glass.
  2. Close the jar tightly.
  3. Place the pot on a magnetic surface (such as a magnetic shelf or refrigerator). This is where the magic happens!
  4. Shake the bottle gently daily for 1 to 2 weeks. This helps to improve the flavor of the oil.
  5. After 1 to 2 weeks, strain the oil through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the herbs and spices.
  6. Pour the infused oil into a clean, airtight bottle.
  7. Store in a cool, dark place.

Exchange Notes: If you don't have rosemary or thyme, you can also use other herbs like oregano, basil or chives. If you don't have smoked paprika, you can use regular paprika, but smoked paprika adds a delicious flavor. You can also add some cayenne pepper for extra spice!

And here we are, the FreaK Fam! A little science, a lot of flavor and a little crazy. Let me know in the comments if you try this recipe and how you use magnets in your kitchen! Until next time, stay curious and keep cooking!
